It was a usual hot and sunny Sunday afternoon in Northern Botswana. I was driving from our base in Maun to an unchurched village to embark on a church planting endeavor. This was several years ago when my wife Cynthia and I served as Missionaries in Botswana. I saw something simple but spectacular that caught my attention. It was a black horse, a brown horse and a white horse all grazing together “in perfect harmony” by the roadside. Of course, I knew there were horses of different colours but that day, it hit me like a rocket or like a revelation: God is a God of variety and He created both animals and humans of different shades and colours according to His purpose. After all
variety they say, is the spice of life.
The animals don’t seem to have any problems with their different skin colours,
but humans do, I jokingly remarked to my Team mates in the vehicle with me. Later on, I also saw a white cow, a black cow and a brown cow all grazing together. Then recently on the mission-fields of Northern Ghana, I saw a whitish/ pinkish pig with her piglets having different colours, some were whitish/pinkish, but some were black and some brownish/yellowish. WOW!! God is an amazing and a colourful Creator.
The George Floyd protests that hit the United States recently and spilled over to Europe and to other parts of the world including Africa is surely a wake-up call for all people everywhere. There certainly are white racists, there are black racists and there are brown racists. There is certainly racism in the Body of Christ and there is certainly racism in the global missions movement.
That sunny Sunday afternoon, I concluded that sin was at the root of
it all. Its just sin which is the root of this canker. It seems to be a very complex and complicated issue that has been in existence for generations but I believe strongly that if we deal with the root, we can find some lasting solutions.
God created us all in His image. Genesis 1:27 – “So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He
created them”.
